W.A.R., needless to say is a powerful album mostly speaking out against the political system in the United States today. It starts out with a warning from the future explaining that perhaps things are not as they seem and new evidence has come to light which could change everything. W.A.R. takes off from there. Monch and his accomplice, Immortal Technique, tear into mass media, rage against the machine and tell radio exactly what to do with itself. This is one of my favorite tracks on the album as it sets the stage for the rest of what is to be said.

“Clap” takes it’s turn speaking out against racism and reminding us where we have come from and where we are now, which isn’t as far as we should be. The track asks us, “When are we gonna get it together”, the forlorn response being “One day, one day, one day”. The end of the song is my favorite for a purely selfish reason. For some reason I love songs with clapping, unexplainable for me, but hey, whatever. “Clap”, as the name would allude to, ends with clapping and a capella rapping. Another thing I enjoy about this part is it’s very reminiscent of the song “9X Outta 10″ off DJ Quik and Kurupt’s album, BlaQKout.

W.A.R. continues on with hit after hit, from “Black Hand Slide”, making a reference to the 1973 movie with the say name. “The Hitman” and “Assassins” are two solid, back-to-back tracks that continue to propel the album along on it’s warpath, with a strong assist from Jean Grae. “Grand Illusion”, featuring Citizen Cope, is the second to last track but it seems like it should be the end. It is an epic song with a backing track that is evocative of a soundtrack to a movie in which the main character boards a spaceship only to be taken from Earth to some place better and more enlightening. Perhaps Pharoahe Monch is alluding to such a thing. Letting us know he is no longer part of this planet and he has gone somewhere more aware, and he’s just back to share.
